Chitosan-Based Hydrogels For Biomedical Applications
Deacetylated chitin, or Chitosan, is a naturally occurring substance that is taken from the hard outer shells of prawns, crabs and lobsters, as well as from mushrooms and yeasts.

An alkaline material, such as sodium hydroxide, is used to treat the chitin shells of prawns and other crustaceans to extract the linear polysaccharide known as chitosan. The commercial and potential biological applications of Chitosan are numerous. The food and beverage sector, personal care items, agriculture, and the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries all use chitosan extensively. Chitosan is used in agriculture as a biopesticide and for seed treatment, helping plants fight off fungus infestations. Chitosan can be used as a fining agent in the beverage industry, particularly in winemaking, and it also aids in preserving products. Chitosan serves as an effective antibacterial and bleeding control agent in bandages for medical application. Fungi, which are regarded as vegan sources of chitosan, can also be used to extract chitosan.
