Biopolymers are any polymers created by living cells that are made up of repeated monomers joined together to form a larger chain. Nucleic acids, sugars, fatty acids, and phosphates are examples of monomers that are typically assembled into biopolymers by processive enzymes. Bacteria naturally make biopolymers to aid in propagation, and they are required for energy storage, structure formation, and biofilm formation.

Given the importance of Biopolymers in bacterial pathogenicity, drug development efforts have focused on disrupting the mechanisms that govern their production. Furthermore, using microorganisms' ability to make unique biopolymers has enabled a wide range of medical and technological uses, with genome sequencing and contemporary molecular technologies yielding modified bacteria that generate specific biomolecules.
