As A Preventive Measure Against Tuberculosis (TB) Infection, The Tuberculosis Vaccine Is Designed
Tuberculosis Vaccine

There is new hope for Tuberculosis Vaccine after decades of research. Revaccinating adolescents with the BCG vaccine they first received as infants dramatically decreased the prevalence of persistent TB infections, according to a Phase II experiment carried out in South Africa in 2018. Another Phase IIb efficacy study, carried out by Aeras (later acquired by IAVI) in collaboration with GSK, demonstrated that the GSK TB vaccine candidate M72, given along with the company's AS01E adjuvant, provided 50% protection against active pulmonary TB disease in adults latently infected with TB bacteria. If these results are confirmed in additional research, it would be a major step forward in the effort to create a potent TB vaccine. Insights from these trials may help researchers create even more effective vaccine candidates.
