Oral antibiotics need to be taken for a longer period of time (four weeks) in patients with arthritis (joint swelling). They could require a second four-week round of oral or intravenous (commonly referred to as IV) antibiotics if arthritis doesn't go away. It's also possible that an infection affecting the brain system or heart needs IV antibiotics.
