Aggrend continues to provide an example of WOW
Server imbalances aren't new but they are encountered in Burning Crusade Classic or WoW Classic. The stories are all over the internet about certain servers in the old-fashioned MMORPGs being home to nearly 90% Horde players or and vice versa. In most cases, when a server is rumored to be overrun by one particular faction, guilds on the opposing side and rather than struggle buy WoTLK Gold, choose to move to a server with more balanced population. This is especially relevant in PvP servers, where a healthy struggle between the factions is essential to the server's popularity.
Aggrend continues to provide an example of how trying to "fix" issues that affect certain categories of players with respect to server balance might unintentionally hurt the experience of more players than it helps. He writes to imagine the scenario that one PvP server is home to a group that is 40% Alliance and 60% Horde. While the majority of players are content, a small portion of Alliance players aren't happy being outnumbered. If Blizzard to let players make free character transfers to that realm, those unhappy Alliance players would shift to a server with better balance of population. However, the negative effect would be that the server where they once resided would turn into a 75% Horde server creating a worse experience to those who were comfortable with the balance of their server.
"In the previous example, doing something well-intentioned to benefit the 20% who are unhappy could have hurt more people than it would have helped buy WoW WoTLK Classic Gold," Aggrend writes. "This is a major part of the problem, and it is the reason why us to spend a lot of time to think about issues before taking action that affects realm populations and faction balance."
