Antimicrobial activity

Antimicrobial activity of natural plant extracts is an important topic in biology and medicine. Plants are known for their many secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, steroids, glycosides, terpenoids, and saponins. All the extracts were tested for their ability to control the growth of bacteria. Although cytotoxicity was measured, it was not always associated with the activity of the extracts.

The disc diffusion method was utilized to test the antimicrobial activity of the various plant extracts. The test bacteria were inoculated on sterile paper discs. After 5 minutes, viable bacterial cells were collected. MIC values were calculated against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.

MICs ranged from 0.02 to 0.52 mg/mL for the medicinal plant extracts. The results indicated that these extracts were effective against all the pathogens studied. Nevertheless, the difference between the concentration and the plant species was not significant.

The results showed that all the plant extracts contained a bioactive compound with a Rf value of about 0.12. This may be attributed to the natural chemical composition of the plant. However, further investigations are necessary to confirm the biological ingredients and their effectiveness against the tested pathogens.

Cytotoxicity was measured by the total aqueous antimicrobial activity (TAA) and selectivity index (SI). Extracts were most active against Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus. Several other bacterial species were relatively resistant. An extract with high TAA was found to be more effective against Candida albicans.

Among the extracts, the aqueous extract of roselle showed a high inhibitory effect against Candida albicans, but there was no significant difference between the plant species and the concentration. Another extract, the ethanolic one, showed antifungal effects against CA. It was concluded that all the five plants exhibited strong antimicrobial activity. Moreover, they could be used as food preservatives, as well as for controlling microbial populations.

Currently, there are hundreds of antibiotics manufactured to combat various microbial infections. These products are often toxic, and they have negative side effects for consumers.
