8 Reasons Why You Should Replace Missing Teeth
Losing a tooth might sound like the start of a funny joke, but in reality, it can be the start of something much more serious.

Losing a tooth might sound like the start of a funny joke, but in reality, it can be the start of something much more serious. Whether you’ve lost one tooth or all your natural teeth through injury, surgery or extraction because of decay, what matters now is that you replace every single tooth as quickly as possible. Tooth restoration is an important service offered by our Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge dental office because it can help you to avoid developing any of these problems:

#1: Loose and Shifting Teeth
When all your teeth are present in your mouth and positioned neatly in a row, each tooth helps to keep the others stable and in line. The moment you have a gap between the teeth, however, you run the risk of those on either side drifting out of their correct positions. When this happens, the remaining teeth can become loose, and you could find yourself losing even more of them.

#2: Misaligned Bite
Your bite is the way in which your teeth move against each other when you chew or speak. It’s important for the upper and lower jaws to meet correctly. When you have gaps caused by missing teeth, the surrounding teeth can become crooked and the opposite teeth can overgrow. This causes your bite to be misaligned, leading to pressure in the wrong places which can cause pain.

#3: Mouth Sores
When your teeth are out of alignment and positioned—or pointing—in the wrong directions, they can easily cause irritation of your gum or cheek tissues. If this continues on a daily basis without any way to provide relief it can cause mouth sores that don’t heal. The experienced dentists at our Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge dental practice will examine your mouth for lesions that aren’t improving, and make recommendations to resolve the problem.

#4: Jaw Problems
You can develop temporomandibular joint or jaw pain (TMJ) from having a bad bite caused by missing teeth. If your facial structure is not fully supported by the bones and teeth, according to the American Dental Academy, it can cause your facial bones to deteriorate and the muscles to sag, which will also make you look older.

#5: Dental Cavities
If your teeth shift as a result of a gap, you might find it difficult to reach all the nooks and crannies when you’re brushing and flossing. This leads to a plaque and tartar build-up, which causes tooth decay and cavities. Regular teeth cleaning by our Pitt meadows and Maple Ridge dental practitioners will help you prevent caries, but ideally you should consider tooth restoration for long term relief.

#6: Migraine Headaches
It’s possible to develop headaches and even migraines as a result of tension in the jaw muscles caused by malocclusion, or a bad bite. Anything that causes your bite to be out of position is likely to end up giving you pain which can develop into a migraine. At our Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge dental office, we might be able to correct the problem that is causing your migraine, before you have to resort to taking prescription drugs.

#7: Ear Problems
Hearing difficulties, tinnitus and ear infections can also develop as a result of a misaligned jaw. The TMJ is located next to your middle ear, which means a disorder in the jaw can impact your hearing. Pressure and inflammation from the TMJ can affect the nerves and muscles in the jaw area, potentially leading to blocked eustachian tubes and ear infection.

#8: Gum Disease
When your teeth move to fill any open spaces in your mouth, they don’t always move in the right direction and rotation. This causes them to become awkwardly positioned, which makes it difficult to reach all the tooth surfaces with your toothbrush and floss. If you develop plaque in inaccessible parts of a tooth it can lead to gum infection and ultimately to periodontal disease.

These are all very good reasons why you should replace missing teeth, whether you have one or 32 that need replacement. At our Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge dental practice we can offer you several options for tooth restoration, including dental implants, crowns, bridges, and full or partial dentures.
