Rohu is mostly found in freshwater ponds, lakes, rivers and streams. They survive on algae and aquatic plants. It breathes by the means of gills and frequently comes over water gulping for air into the air bladder. They bleed in running water during July and August. Their sexual maturity takes place between the age of two and five years. During monsoon is the ideal season of spawning. These spawns are collected from rivers and reared in water reservoirs and lakes.
