Compostable vs biodegradable
Trader Joe's is taking steps to reduce its plastic usage in the produce section. They are replacing single-use plastic produce bags with biodegradable bags. And, they are removing single-use carryout bags and plastic pouches.
Trader Joe's also sells brown paper bags that can be recycled. These bags come in holiday themed designs, and they are recyclable.
Trader Joe's recently switched from styrofoam packaging to compostable trays and bags. This change is a part of their commitment to selling more local and organic produce.
If you are not sure about whether your plastic bag is compostable, you may want to ask the person at your store. Some bags are designed for composting, while others are designed for dry waste.
Trader Joe's also sells biodegradable tote bags. However, some are made with a thin layer of metal or a chemical coating. When shopping, check the brand to see if it is BPI certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute.
Trader Joe's has been facing criticism for its overuse of packaging. In response to customer demand, the company has implemented new schemes to make its products more environmentally friendly.

Upcycled brown paper bags
While Trader Joe's may not be the greenest supermarket around, they have come out with some pretty impressive compostable products, including the paper tea bag, which is one of the most eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags. And they've started selling reusable tote bags, which are perfect for carrying your groceries in style. In fact, you can even drop off your plastic grocery bags at a nearby retail store.
Trader Joe's has also made the smart move by replacing its old Styrofoam packaging with Compostable Packaging made from plant matter. The best part is that you can take these to your local municipal organics collection program and have them turned into compost. They're not the only ones doing the same thing.
There are several other companies doing a similar thing, from Rok Cork to Asean, which manufactures private label and Stalkmarket brands, both of which use sugarcane bagasse as their primary material of choice.
Trader Joe's has made an effort to recycle its plastic grocery bags through its How2Recycle Store drop-off label, though this is a rather limited service. But for those who can't make the trip to their nearest retail outlet, there's always the option of turning your reusable bag in at your local municipal compost site.

Crown poly
Trader Joe's is a tiki themed grocery store chain that operates out of Monrovia, California. Several big cities have banned the use of plastic bags at the checkout line. The company has not yet embraced the plastic bag replacement program, but plans to do so by April of this year.
Trader Joe's new compostable produce bags are made from an ephemeral material that breaks down in landfills. These bags are larger than the usual bag and are more likely to be opened up, thus reducing waste. Trader Joe's is also testing an alternative material for use on other non-perishable items. As the industry leader in sustainable practices, the company has high hopes of making a real dent in the trash pile.
A similar claim was recently made by Crown Poly, a green bagging solutions company. They claim their Crown Poly Pull-N-Pak Compostable Green Bag is the largest reusable compostable bags on the market. While the claim is unsubstantiated, the company has a lot to offer. Their crown trumps include a greenbag that can hold a variety of grocery items while being compatible with any waste disposal system.
