Types of Flow Meters for Liquids Water Gas and Steam

Liquids water gas and steam are important elements of most industrial processes, so it is essential to measure their flow using the appropriate flow meter technology.

There are many types of flow meters, each suited to different applications and requirements. 

Variable Area Flow Meters or Rotameters

Variable area flow meters, also known as rotameters, are the most common type of float-based flow meter used for measuring liquids water gas and steam. They consist of a tube (usually glass) with a self-centring float that rises and falls.

They measure flow rate by calculating the difference between the float drop and the volumetric flow through the float-tube system. They are easy to install and maintain, can be used in hazardous areas, and can be installed over multiple process lines without significant pressure loss.

However, a variable area flow meter for H2O2 project is not as accurate as magnetic or Coriolis flow meters. Changes in process conditions, such as pressure, temperature and fluid density, can cause inaccurate measurements. They must be calibrated for these fluid characteristics.

Oval Gear Flow Meters

Oval gear flow meters are one of the most popular types of positive displacement (PD) meters. These flow meters are simple, robust and provide direct volumetric flow measurement with high sensitivity.

These instruments feature a rotor pair of high precision oval gears. As fluid flows through the meter, each 'pocket' of fluid is swept through the rotors as the gears turn.

Oval gear meters are primarily used for higher-viscosity liquids such as oils, syrups and fuels. Their small footprint, no flow conditioning requirements and ease of installation has led to their widespread use in many OEM process fluid applications.

Pelton Flow Meters

A Pelton flow meter measures the rate of fluid flow with no moving parts. This type of meter is available in a variety of designs and is used in liquids water gas and steam applications.

These meters utilize a positive displacement device that uses two radially pitched helical gears to entrap process fluid. They can be used to measure high-viscosity processes that have a consistent viscosity and a narrow band of variation, such as oil, lubricants, paint, and milk.

Optical or magnetic sensors detect the passage of each blade of the rotor and transmit a pulse train proportional to the speed of the rotor. This Turnkey Project method of measurement is accurate to 0.1% or better in a wide range of fluids.

Clamp-on Flow Meters

Clamp-on flow meters are non-invasive flow measurement devices that attach to the outside of pipes without compromising their structure or composition. They offer a cost-effective and versatile solution for measuring liquids water gas and steam in many applications.

Flow meters can be used to measure the volume, speed, and mass of a fluid, as well as its density. They can also be used to determine temperature and pressure.
