Oneof the prerequisites for achieving fertilization and successful pregnancy is sperm motility. It has a contribution to your success rates in ART procedureslike IUI and IVF. Healthy sperm motility is sperms with forwardingprogressions of at least 25 micrometres per second. Sperm motility also refersto the ability of the sperm to swim efficiently to reach the egg during theprocess called fertilization.

 

Thereare different types of sperm motility issues:

Slowor sluggish progressive motility

Non-progressivemotility, which is as anything less than 5 micrometres per second

Nomobility

 

Diagnosis:

Spermmotility testing is through a routine semen analysis. These are usually obtainedby masturbation at a doctor’s office or testing laboratory.  Acondition of slow sperm motility is known as Asthenozoospermia when less than40% of total sperms are motile.

 

Causesof Asthenozoospermia:

·         -Varicocele.

-         Genital tract infections

-         Testicular dystrophy

-         Anti-sperm antibodies

-         Prolonged period of abstinence.

-         Immotile cilia syndrome

 

Treatment

Afew changes in the lifestyle may help increase sperm motility for some men:

 

·         Exercise regularly

·         Maintain a healthy weight

·         Limit cell phone exposure

·         Reduce alcohol

·         Quit smoking
