It Is Used To Treat Severe Pain And Is A Weak Partial Mu-Opioid Receptor Agonist As Well As A Weak Kappa-Opioid Receptor Antagonist
Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine treatment may result in psychological or physiological (physical) dependence. It has a slow onset of activity, a long duration of action, and a half-life ranging from 24 to 60 hours. Once a patient has reached a point of stability with the (buprenorphine) medication and program, he or she has three options: continue using the (buprenorphine-only medication), switch to a Buprenorphine Market combination, or undergo a medically supervised withdrawal. Buprenorphine, unlike some other opioids and opioid antagonists, binds weakly to and has little to no activity at the sigma receptor. Buprenorphine also inhibits voltage-gated sodium channels via the local anaesthetic binding site, which contributes to its potent local anaesthetic properties.
