As spotted in PC Gamer, some former Blizzard and D2R Items Blizzard North employees hosted a panel last weekend at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. During that panel, the group of former Blizz designers discussed the history of Diablo as well as their own connection to the games, and shared tales of the creation of the popular series. During the panel, former lead designer on Diablo 3, Jay Wilson was interviewed about the controversial auction house, providing an explanation of its origins , and much more.
"When I was working at Blizzard," said Wilson, "the reason for doing the auction house in real money was to protect the company. This wasn't about money. We didn't anticipate making this much money out of it. The most difficult thing in Diablo 2 was item duping and duping hacks and all Gold sellers and those things."
According to Wilson explained, Blizzard's way to overcome this issue with Diablo 3 was to take the control of the trading market. This was also the motive behind the game's decision to demand an online internet connection. Wilson claims that once you give an offline client hackers "got the game." This is why you must be always online and auction houses were Blizzard's bad attempts to control the problems that came from Diablo 2.
It was a while before release in 2012 Diablo 3's auction houses was deemed to be one of its most flaws being endlessly mocked and criticized by the players. However, removing it wasn't an easy task and wasn't due to technical difficulties. The reason for its sluggish 2014 removal was because an auction house had been an envisioned element of the game that was printed on all its retail boxes as well as there were Buy D2R items PS4 legal issues to cut it off.
