What is reduced fee/sliding therapy? Isn't low-cost therapy as good as full-fee psychotherapy?
Your Story Counseling offers individual, couples and family trauma and sex therapy counseling for a variety of needs. All of our doctors have at least a master's degree in psychotherapy and use research-backed methods and procedures

If you are thinking about seeing a therapist or are completely new to therapy, you may be wondering about a lot of different things, including the title of a therapist, the price differences between therapists, and really where to start looking for a therapist. So let's break it all down.

In Ontario, a therapist can practice under many different titles, including psychologist, clinical psychologist, MSW, OT, registered psychotherapist (RP), registered  psychotherapist (qualification), counselor, and there may be more that I'm not even mentioning here (such as social workers and nurses who may also practice psychotherapy). In this post I will differentiate between RP and RP (qualification).

RP v. RP (qualification) - What's the difference?

A registered psychotherapist (qualifying) is a person who is either in the process of completing a master's degree in counseling or who has completed their degree. A qualifying designation means they are in the process of completing the prescribed number of direct therapy client hours. Someone holding an RP (Qualifying) degree must also be supervised by a qualified supervisor who essentially oversees their clinical work. After meeting the hours and supervision requirements, the individual is eligible to take the registration exam. When they pass, they become registered psychotherapists and can drop a (qualification) alongside their degree. This process is regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).

Is low-cost therapy right for me?

Now let's talk about the price per session. You can see a wide range of prices, from very low (around $20) to the higher range of up to $200 per session. how to choose It depends on several different factors. Only psychologists or registered psychotherapists with decades of experience can charge higher prices. Lower cost options are generally offered by clinicians who have been trained to provide psychotherapy but may not have as many years under their belt.
