The construction of this world-famous observatory was started by King Sawai Jai Singh (II) of Aamer, in the year 1728 and which was completed in 1734. King Sawai Jai Singh (II) of Aamer was the founder of Jaipur pink city. Sawai Jai Singh was also an astronomical scientist. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II had built five observatories across the country on the basis of Hindu astronomy. These observatories were built in Jaipur, Delhi, Ujjain, Banaras, and Mathura. Jantar Mantar of Jaipur is one of them and this is the largest among them.
